Chapter Twelve

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Drako surfaced from a deep, dreamless sleep. The woman in his arms still slept, lying on her side facing the windows. His body pressed against her backside, one arm circling her, his hand cupping a warm breast.

He smiled drowsily. One morning he would awaken her by slipping his shaft inside her while she slept. Not today, though.

Opening his eyes, Drako noted the early hour. The sun had not risen though night’s darkest hours had passed. What had awakened him?

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The noise carried in the predawn silence, disturbing his woman who stirred and then settled into sleep again. Drako realized someone was banging on his front door. If he ignored it, the intruder would go away.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

The banging grew louder, more insistent, mirroring the intruder’s impatience. When his woman stirred again, Drako pressed a kiss on the side of her neck and then slid out of bed.

Slipping into his robe, Drako glanced toward the bed and saw her watching him. “I will return in a few minutes,” he said, his voice husky. “Go back to sleep.”

Drako closed the bedcurtains and headed for the door. He hurried down the corridor to the stairs, cursing the idiot who had broken their peaceful sleep.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

“Who is it?” Drako demanded, before unlocking the door.

“Hektor Pavlova, you lying bastard.”

Drako opened the door and ducked the younger man’s fist. Hektor rushed inside, but Drako grabbed him before he reached the stairs and shoved him against the wall.

“Where is my sister?” Hektor demanded, flicking a glance at the stairs.

“Lower your voice,” Drako ordered. “Kat is sleeping in my bed.” He ducked another fist aimed toward his face.

“You promised not to dishonor her.”

“I want to marry her,” Drako said, his words calming the younger man. “Kat cannot return home until tonight lest someone sees her and ruins her reputation. I will escort her home after dark.”

“How can I trust you?” Hektor asked. “You may be planning to lie abed with her all day and then forget your promises.”

“If you wait here in silence,” Drako said, “I can prove my intentions are honorable.”

Hektor stared into his eyes for several long moments. Finally, he nodded.

Cursing all brothers, Drako climbed the stairs to his chamber. He parted the curtains and sat on the edge of the bed.

“Rudolf is waiting for papers in the foyer,” he lied. “If you value your reputation, do not leave this bed.”

Katerina yawned. “Why does he need papers at this hour?”

“Rudolf rises early to breakfast with his children.”

That lie brought a soft smile to her lips. “What a good father.”

Drako gave her a quick kiss and pulled the curtains shut. Walking down one flight, he grabbed the pouch he had left on his desk as well as her reticule.

Gaining the foyer, Drako noted his future brother-in-law’s forbidding expression. “Keep this safe,” he said, passing him the pouch.

Hektor opened it and reached inside. His dark eyes, so much like his sister’s, widened when he saw the enormous diamond in his hand.

“Behold, Le Grand Sancy.
